My Japan trip took me from Tokyo through Kyoto to Osaka. These guides bring together the places I visited, where I stayed, the food and bars I enjoyed, and the stops I would skip next time.

Start with my five-day Tokyo itinerary for neighbourhoods, temples and a trip to Kamakura. My four-day Kyoto guide covers Arashiyama, Fushimi Inari and the day trips we made. Finish with my Osaka guide for coffee, food, bars and a less structured end to the journey.

Use the itineraries as a starting point, then leave room to wander. Tokyo rewards time in different neighbourhoods, Kyoto benefits from early starts, and Osaka was where we put the checklists away.

How should you use these guides? Choose Tokyo for a five-day city itinerary, Kyoto for temples and the surrounding trips described in the article, and Osaka for food, bars and wandering. These are accounts of one journey, not an exhaustive guide to Japan. Check individual booking and transport details for your dates, especially before copying a longer day trip.
