Exploring wineries around Cape Town is about much more than wine tasting. Many estates offer beautiful landscapes, peaceful walks, and a chance to slow down and enjoy the surroundings. These are the wineries I personally visited and would recommend—each for a slightly different reason, depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for.

1. GROOT CONSTANTIA

One of the oldest and most iconic wine estates in South Africa. Groot Constantia is perfect if you want to combine great wine with relaxed walks through vineyards and gardens. The estate also has a wine museum, which adds a nice cultural layer to the visit and helps you understand the history of winemaking in the region. A very balanced experience—educational, scenic, and enjoyable.

2. BOSCHENDAL

Boschendal is definitely on the more touristy side, but there’s a reason for that. The estate is beautiful, well-organised, and the wine quality is genuinely excellent. Even though it can get busy, the setting still feels impressive, with wide open spaces and mountain views. A solid choice if you want a polished winery experience without compromising on wine quality.

3. OLDENBURG VINEYARDS

Oldenburg feels completely different—fancy, private, and very calm. Tucked away in the mountains near Stellenbosch, it offers a more exclusive and intimate experience. The atmosphere is quiet and refined, making it ideal if you want to enjoy wine without crowds. Everything here feels intentional, from the setting to the tasting experience.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Honestly, it doesn’t really matter which winery you choose—the quality is consistently high everywhere. From crisp whites and elegant reds to rosé and bubbles, the wine selection across Cape Town’s wineries is outstanding. Tastings are also very affordable, usually costing around £5–£10 per person (approximately €6–€12 or $6–$13), which makes it easy to explore a few different places without overthinking it.

After the tasting, you can usually buy your favourites directly from beautifully curated on-site shops, which also make great souvenir stops. Booking in advance is a must, especially during high season, and many wineries offer the option to pair tastings with snacks or chocolate, adding an extra layer to the experience.

If you’re planning to drive, be mindful of alcohol consumption. Otherwise, it’s worth organising a taxi or private driver in advance so you can fully relax and enjoy the day without worrying about getting back.
